  • Is Runtown’s Song ‘Mad Over You’ The New ‘Ojuelegba’ By Wizkid?? (Drop Your Comments)

This article was written mainly for Naijaloaded. I had been harbouring the thought of featuring on a major Entertainment website. I had sent lots of articles bothering on national issues, however,  none got published, so I decided to write an article about Wizkid and Runtown. This taught me about identifying your market. Though a short article, this article also made it to Omojuwa and other Nigerian blogs.
Late last year, Eric Manny’s act Runtown released a Afro-Pop track, ‘Mad over You’ which also had a fusion of some Ghanianflows and captivating Afro-beat sounds.
The song has continued to garner massive airplay on most Radio and TV stations and also sits atop many music charts.
This feat drawn comparison with Wizkid’s popular track ‘Ojuelegba’.

Ojuelegba, from Wizkid’s sophomore album Ayo, was an instant hit.
Infact it was arguably Africa’s biggest song for the year 2015.
The song which illustrated Wizkid’s early life as a musician; opened new doors for Wizkid as an international artiste; and also establish a working relationship withCanadian rapper Drake, who went on to jump on the track along with British-Nigeria grime artiste, Skepta.

Across 2015-2016, Ojuelegba was everyone’s favourite at any event. It was a song that could soothe your feelings, inspire you and according to Skepta: ‘it could be a song that could gear you up when you’re down’.
However, Runtown’s Mad Over YOU could step up to be the new Ojuelegba and also Africa’s best song of 2017.
The Del B-produced song tells of Runtown’s endless love for an unknown girl telling her of his non-stop love for her.
Mad Over You has started topping most Nigerian charts and also No.38 on the popular billboard charts.
Runtown’s Mad Over YOU looks set to be the best song coming out of 2017 in Africa.
  • Has Social Media Tampered With Our Brain Configuration Settings?

So, a long time ago, about three months ago, I wrote this article. It was one of those articles that I wrote within 30minutes. The title came while I was eating, I hadn't written anything for that week. So, it came as "Has Social Media Altered Our Brain"... Then I remembered a Nokia phone I was using which had a fault when I tampered with the configuration settings. Then I changed it to "Has Social Media Tampered With Our Brain's Configuration Settings". The title was lit this time. No blog visitor will see it and refuse to read. Having written down the topic, it was easy to write the content. This article was published On Naijaloaded, Omojuwa and other sites like NigerianToday, Naijadailies etc

    A connection of Smartphones

It seems social media has come to stay in Nigeria especially among our youths and adults. After the successful penetration of Facebook, subsequent entries of Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn have been greeted with lot of views and reviews. However as it is with everything in Life, an advantage of a thing likewise has a disadvantage. Social Media has benefitted various classes of People in Nigeria. From The Bloggers(Makinde Azeez, Omojuwa, Linda Ikeji, OloriSuperGal) to the upcoming artists, social media has been a huge benefit to a lot of people.

Nevertheless, it seems Social Media has altered our brain’s configuration settings. An average Nigerian wakes up and the first thing He does is to check Whatsapp messages. Thoughts like “Has He replied” “Has She accepted to go out on a date with me”, are always popular on the minds of the Nigerian Youth. Another may decide to check on Instagram if his recent post has garnered likes or how many followers He has gained overnight.

Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all rank high in the list of social Media Apps on an average Nigerian Youth smartphone. Especially on Twitter where all kinds of savages are recorded. An average Nigerian can spend 10hours tweeting, retweeting and replying on mostly trivial and unnecessary issues.

Why have we not tried to convert those hours of Joblessness to ones of making money?

Especially our celebrities who most Nigerians troll and condemn on these social medias, these people are making money off those controversies. Remember the time when Linda Ikeji got embroiled in a fight with Wizkid? The truth is she had many visitors, views, and comments on her blog due to that controversy. It’s time for every Nigerian to make judicious use of social Media. Stop wasting time and energy begging for likes to win a competition on Instagram when you could make far enough money through efficient use of social media. Many have abused social media to the extent of taking photos in their friends’ clothes just to post on Instagram or rather taking photos in their lingerie or posing half-naked.

Relationships have been formed on various social media sites but it’s on record that Social media has also destroyed some “once upon a time fruitful relationship”. The thing is news and information spread much faster on social media. Accusations of infidelity ranging from the husband seen in company with another woman to the wife captured in a hotel with another man, What about the nude photos and video of ladies released by their ex-boyfriend? Even our parents are on Instagram stalking and monitoring their children!

Definitely, Social media has tampered with our brain’s configuration settings!

  • Why Wizkid Needs To Return Home

Last year, Ayodeji Balogun better known by his stage name, Wizkid bought a house in L.A in what was purported by Media Houses to be the most expensive and biggest house ever bought by a Nigerian artiste . It was in that period He recorded his part in “One Dance”. Shortly afterwards, He went on a world tour to several countries which included The Netherlands, Congo, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Cyprus and several other countries. He returned home with Davido after they both performed at a show in a Congo. However, it didn’t take long before He returned to the US where He has been recording with several foreign artistes and also inked the deal with Sony. For instance, he featured on Justine Skye‘s “U Don’t Know”, Zara Larsson’s “Sundown”, Kranium’s “Can’t Believe” and also recorded a song with Diplo, Jidenna and French Montana. He also made finishing touches to his third studio album “Sounds From The Other Sounds” which is scheduled to be released towards the end of the year.

However, a larger percentage of his fans believes Wizkid needs to return home so as to claim bragging rights as Nigeria’s Biggest artiste. Wizkid seems to have lost popularity ratings among Nigerians especially those on the streets as many believed he has had to change his sound just to appeal to his American fans. Recent checks on his last two songs, “Sweet Love” and “Come Closer” sees Wizkid trying to sound Caribbean –The Jamaican Sound. His fans want the return of the Starboy –The usual Afro-Beat club-banging sound.

Moreover, Wizkid needs to return home because his Nigerian fans made him who He is right now. Why is he trying to place his American fans over them? He needs to realise that there is no place like home. Many think Wizkid is now proud for him to have thought of staging a “Homecoming Concert”. So, you’re a foreigner now, Wizkid? You need to identify with your roots!

Furthermore, Wizkid needs to come home because of his finances. Imagine, the Starboy has not been booked for any event yet in 2017. His last show was in December 2016 at the Pepsi Rhythm Unplugged. Many Event organisers are sceptical of booking Wizkid given the fact that they’ll have to pay for his flight tickets, accommodation and other irrelevant costs. The more reason they’re settling for homegrown artistes like Davido, Falz and Olamide.

Lastly Wizkid on a lighter mood, you need to come back home because you simply miss home. You miss the times you spent at Quilox and Club Escape. You miss Lagos. If there’s any clause in the Sony contract you signed stipulating you not to go to Nigeria, try and re-negotiate just like Davido did.
